The style of American automobiles mirrors the history and culture of America. The elegant Duesenbergs that came of age in the gilded '20s contributed the expression "doozy" to the language. The finned space rockets of the late '50s and early '60s reflected America on its way to the moon. The muscle cars of the late '60s and early '70s displayed the exhuberant excess of that era, just before the 1973 oil embargo ended the party. |
Soon Americans were driving econoboxes such as the Vega, the Pinto, and the Chevette. Americans were losing interest in their chariots, giving rise to the automobile as appliance, reflected so well in the bland boxiness of the Chrysler K cars, and later in the indistinguishable aerodynamics of so many American and Japanese cars that ply the interstates. |
